The headspin emerged as a signature element of b-boy culture in New York City during the 1970s. It was popularized by early hip-hop pioneers and quickly became a staple of competitive breakdancing battles. The move perfectly captured the athletic and acrobatic spirit of the emerging Bronx music scene.

B-boys typically wear a beanie or a specialized headspin cap with a smooth, slick surface to protect their scalps. This reduces friction with the floor, allowing the dancer to spin faster and avoid skin burns. Some dancers also use protective headgear with built-in neck support when learning the move.

In the terminology of breaking, the headspin is strictly classified as a power move. Power moves are defined by their momentum, acrobatic nature, and requirement for significant physical strength. They are usually the highlight of a b-boy's routine, meant to impress the judges and the crowd.
