description Kolyvanov (High Bar) Overview
help Kolyvanov (High Bar) FAQ
What is the Kolyvanov on high bar?
The Kolyvanov is a high-bar release in which the gymnast swings inward, lets go of the bar, travels over it, and catches again. It is named after Soviet gymnast Valery Kolyvanov.
Is the Kolyvanov a dismount?
No. The defining feature is the release and regrasp of the same high bar during the routine. A gymnast may finish the routine with a separate dismount after performing a Kolyvanov.
What makes the Kolyvanov difficult to catch?
The gymnast must coordinate the inward swing, release timing, body shape, flight path, and regrasp while rotating around the bar. The catch must occur with enough height and alignment to continue the routine safely.
How is the Kolyvanov different from a Tkachev release?
Both are high-bar release skills, but they use different swing and flight mechanics. A Kolyvanov is recognized by its inward-swing entry and over-the-bar regrasp, while a Tkachev family release is normally described through a backward flight over the bar from a different action.
