Lough Derg is the third-largest lake in the Republic of Ireland, situated on the River Shannon and bordering Counties Tipperary, Clare, and Galway. It is the deepest of the Shannon lakes and functions as a reservoir for the hydroelectric power station at Ardnacrusha, completed in the 1920s. The lake contains several islands, including the historically significant Holy Island, and is actively used for recreational boating and coarse fishing.
