Memmel (Uneven Bars)

The Memmel is a release element featuring a piked Tkachev action from a toe-on entry. The gymnast releases the bar, travels over it in a pike, and regraspes the rail.

It is named after American gymnast Chellsie Memmel. She became the women’s all-around world champion in 2005.

Both skills involve backward flight over the bar, but the Memmel is specifically associated with a piked body position and toe-on entry. The entry and shape make it a distinct named variation rather than simply another name for every Tkachev.

The toe-on entry sets the gymnast’s body position and generates the swing needed for the release. The timing must allow the gymnast to open or close the pike correctly before reaching back for the bar.
