Micromodal

MicroModal is a branded variant of modal fiber produced by the Austrian company Lenzing AG, with fibers finer than those of conventional modal. The finer fiber diameter gives MicroModal fabrics a noticeably smoother surface, softer hand feel, and more fluid drape than standard modal textiles.

MicroModal is produced by Lenzing from cellulose derived from sustainably sourced beechwood, primarily from European forests, and the fiber is biodegradable. Lenzing's production process uses a closed-loop system that recovers and reuses the majority of the chemicals involved, though the overall sustainability of any garment also depends on how it is dyed and manufactured.

MicroModal is widely used for underwear, t-shirts, loungewear, and lightweight knit garments where softness against the skin and drape are prioritized. It is frequently blended with elastane or spandex to add stretch, and some premium bedding brands also use MicroModal for sheets and pillowcases.

MicroModal fabrics generally resist pilling and shrinking better than many cellulosic fibers thanks to Lenzing's high-quality manufacturing process, but they can still degrade with aggressive washing or high heat. Gentle cycles, cold water, and air drying or low-heat tumble drying are recommended to preserve the fiber's characteristic softness over time.
