The viscose process was developed and patented in Britain in 1892 by Charles Frederick Cross, Edward Bevan, and Clayton Beadle, and commercial viscose rayon production began in the early twentieth century. It is used as filament or staple fibre in textiles and is classified as semi-synthetic because its cellulose feedstock is natural but the fibre is manufactured chemically.
