Authentic Perry is an alcoholic beverage made specifically by fermenting the juice of perry pears, which are distinct, bitter cultivars grown solely for this purpose and not for eating. "Pear cider," on the other hand, is often a commercial term for a drink made from standard culinary or eating pears, or a pear-flavored apple cider. True perry relies on historical pear varieties that contain high levels of tannins.

Perry has a long history of production in the West Midlands of England, particularly in the counties of Herefordshire, Worcestershire, and Gloucestershire. This region is famous for the "Three Counties" orchards, which cultivate specialized perry pear varieties. It is also traditionally produced in regions of France, where it is known as "Poiré."

Perry pears are small, hard, and highly astringent, making them entirely unpleasant to eat raw.
