Socompa fumaroles

description Socompa fumaroles Overview

Socompa fumaroles are volcanic gas vents associated with Volcán Socompa, a dacitic composite stratovolcano on the Chile-Argentina border in the Central Andes. The volcano rises to about 6,031 m and has a broad collapse scar and debris-avalanche deposit formed when part of the edifice failed; young lava domes partly fill the scar. High-elevation fumarolic ground on Socompa also supports steam-associated microbial communities, making the vents relevant to volcanology and extremophile research.
