Syringa microphylla

Syringa microphylla is commonly called the littleleaf lilac. It is a deciduous shrub belonging to the olive family (Oleaceae) and is native to northern China. Its common name derives from its noticeably smaller leaves compared to standard lilac varieties.

The littleleaf lilac is primarily distinguished from most other lilac species by its small, fine-textured leaves. Additionally, it has the unique ability to produce a second flush of fragrant flowers in late summer. This reblooming characteristic is highly prized by gardeners.

The littleleaf lilac produces clusters of highly fragrant, tubular flowers that are typically pale pink or light purplish-red. These blooms appear in mid-to-late spring and are noticeably smaller and more delicate than the flowers of the common lilac. A second, lighter bloom often occurs later in the season.

As a plant native to the rocky slopes of northern China, the littleleaf lilac thrives in well-draining soil and full sun. It is notably more drought-tolerant and heat-resistant than many other lilac species. It makes an excellent landscaping choice for warmer climates where traditional lilacs struggle.
