Yatala Wehera

description Yatala Wehera Overview

Yatala Wehera, also spelled Yatala Vehera, is an ancient Buddhist stupa at Deberawewa near Tissamaharama in Sri Lanka's Hambantota District. The monument is generally dated to the third century BCE, but its founding story is preserved mainly through local tradition. That tradition attributes the construction to the regional ruler Mahanaga, who is said to have built the dagoba after the birth of his son at the site. The stupa forms part of the archaeological and living religious landscape of the ancient Ruhuna region.
