help AWS Systems Manager FAQ
Can AWS Systems Manager open an EC2 shell without exposing SSH?
Yes. Session Manager can provide a browser-based or AWS CLI shell without opening inbound SSH or RDP ports, provided the node has SSM Agent connectivity and appropriate IAM permissions.
What must be installed before an EC2 instance appears in Systems Manager?
The machine must run SSM Agent, have an IAM instance profile or equivalent hybrid activation, and reach the Systems Manager service endpoints. Systems Manager can also manage registered on-premises and multicloud machines, not just Amazon EC2 instances.
How does Patch Manager differ from Run Command?
Patch Manager evaluates and installs operating-system patches according to patch baselines and policies. Run Command executes an SSM document or shell command across selected managed nodes and is intended for broader remote administration.
Is Parameter Store a replacement for AWS Secrets Manager?
Parameter Store can hold encrypted SecureString values using AWS KMS and works well for configuration data. Secrets Manager adds features aimed at secret lifecycle management, including managed rotation for supported credentials, so the two services are not identical.
